I find it comforting when I see that people care (for who or whatever it may be). But it also makes me smile sadly when I see the shared photos of abandoned and/or maltreated animals, the reports of mass murdered wild animals, of "our pets" being eaten in foreign countries... all these accompanied by, of course, an unmistakable accusation of that terrible foreign practice! Yes, coz we mostly publish about these oh so terrible practices that happen very far away and that are easily judged with an arrogant sense of "I would never ever do that myself, of course!".
Wait a minute! What if we stood still and had a serious look into the mirror first!
We kill cows, horses, pigs, chickens, lambs, calfs, colts and more (just after maltreating them long enough to fit our expectations of good meat!). We "grow" and kill animals and their babies (yes, their babies!) to eat them, although we'd have lots and lots of alternatives. We don't need animal products to survive!
Not even speaking about the ridiculous and environmentally catastrophic fact that there are millions of people starving while we grow food for animals we're maltreating and eating.
It's so easy to judge the practices of others while not even looking down at ones own plate!
Don't get me wrong! We need to rise awareness for what is wrong around us at all costs! But I believe that we need to stop judging when rising awareness and simultaneously becoming aware of our own failures. And then... ACT!
I believe in a day where disrespecting, maltreating & killing men, women, children, animals, trees and nature will be considered a crime and will no longer be tolerated.
I believe in a day I will tell my daughter:
"Once upon a time, humans got lost and slided down a vicious circle of hatred, greed, materialism, blindness, disrespect & disconnection. But the seed of Love & Compassion made its way through darkness to get back to light. The beautiful world we're living in now is the fruit of a long journey through darkness. We need to remember our story in order to never stop nurturing and honoring our deep connection to Mother Earth!"
For that day to arrive we need to wake up, look at the mirror, gather, get out and act! There's no time for judgment, arrogance and apathy when you get up and act for a better future! But there is plenty of time for reconnection, kindness and joy!
